For the first time West High students were in the Federal Courthouse in Greenville, TN to encourage civic education throughout the Northwest Tennessee region. Eleven students from Ms.Ripley’s classroom were anonymously judged. And later their submissions were entered in the Constitution Day art contest. The contest strived to give students an opportunity to express both their artistic skills and patriotism. Students were allowed to use: Watercolors, markers, colored pencils, collaging materials, and tracing paper. The contest instructions were as follows: “Students were to create artworks based on an examination of the language of the Constitution and the personal connections they make. These artworks incorporated words, illustrations, and mixed media images.” This project and lesson plan was created by art teacher James Hobin to engage his students at Boston International Newcomers Academy.
