West High School teacher and athletic trainer, Jeremy Emmons was recently recognized for his heroism during a shooting across from school property. On Nov. 7 2023 a student was shot across the street from West High School minutes after the school day ended. Emmons was working as a crossing guard and thought he heard shots. After radio confirmation of gunfire, he then ran to the scene to stabilize the victim as he waited for emergency medical services to arrive. Emmons applied pressure to the victim’s gunshot wounds. After police arrived, Emmons was given a tourniquet to stop the bleeding as police searched for the assailant.
In the weekly West High Staff meeting on Feb. 21 2024, Emmons was honored by superintendent, General Arnold Bunch and Hamblen County Sheriff, Chad Mullins. Emmons was presented with a coin recognizing that he went above and beyond for the school and a West High Student.
