First-Annual DECA/FBLA Meeting Starts Off Year With A Rousing Success

Monday, Aug. 29, the first annual meeting of DECA and FBLA was held. The meeting was a great success. With over 30 students in attendance. From this point forward, meetings will be held on the last Monday of every month. During this meeting, officers in the club(s) were decided upon. However, those in the highest level of leadership (presidents) have not changed, with Chloe Seal leading DECA and Lauren Gray at the head of FBLA.

Students may also purchase a Business Club T-Shirt for $8. Dues are expected from members by or before Sept. 19, due to Mrs. Whaley, for FBLA and Cutshaw, DECA. Students may also join both clubs and get a T-shirt for $35. The Business Club(s) will have a Thanksgiving drive Nov. 1-18.

According to a letter in the agenda of the opening meeting, “This is a club (DECA/FBLA) for anyone wanting to learn more about running a business, accounting, economics, marketing, web design, business math, public speaking, job interviews, word processing and so many more subjects” in this letter it was also stated that DECA and FBLA“...compete in Region and State competitions” Students with any interest in business and/or competitions related to business should consider joining, which can be done by paying previously mentioned dues.

FBLA president Lauren Gray stated, “FBLA provides students with many opportunities to grow their leadership skills, gain service hours, and take on new challenges. As a member of FBLA, I have been fortunate enough to compete at both State and National level conferences with my partner, Bella. We traveled to Chicago to compete, which was an experience in and of itself! Learning more about how the business world works-- through preparing for conferences and real-world projects like FBLA and DECA’s annual Toys for Tots drive-- has been very rewarding and I look forward to what this year holds for West High’s business clubs!”
