Over the weekend, the Trojan Nation’s Speech and Debate team participated in a competition at Cookeville High School. Out of the various members, three earned a high enough ranking to make their way towards the national competition, which will be taking place during June in Phoenix, Arizona. The West Side Story Newspaper staff would like to congratulate Abigail Snider, Jeffrey Glover, and Joseph Parrott for their respective achievements. Snider earned first place in oral interpretation, Glover earned first in dramatic interpretation, and Parrott earned fourth place in program oral interpretation.
Parrott, member of speech and debate for four years, shared his thoughts of his time at Cookeville, “The tournament itself was an amazing experience, but also a stressful one. At a tournament of this size and proportion you really never know what to expect. But even if you don't make it to finals, every second of the tournament is a learning experience… I've grown so much since my freshman year on the team, and even when I graduate, the lessons I've learned through this program will be with me every second of the way.”
Lorna Baxley, another senior member of the debate team, agreed in his sentiment, “deeply enjoying the tournament” and all of its inspiring offerings. Nonetheless, may the national championship bring fruitful offerings to the qualifying students. The West Side Story Newspaper Staff wishes them good luck.
