Trojan Talk for the week of Aug. 7-11

As another Summer passes, a new school year begins! Welcome back everyone to the first week of the 2023-2024 school year here at Morristown-Hamblen West High School. This is the 55th year West High has been open since its open in 1968 and the 55th year West High has been "Shaping Hamblen County's Future, one student at a time." I hope every student is prepared for another year of learning and shaping their own futures too.

Morristown West is lucky to have added many new faces to the school staff this school year! This includes: David Aten (ELL), Elijah Brown (P.E./ALP), James Clark (CTE construction), Emily Corum (Science), Heather Cooper (English), Dennis Cupp (Science), Summer Creech (Library), Kelci Gibson (English), Mason Hance (Social Studies), Samantha Helton (fine arts), Misty Laprade (Special education), Andrea Smith (Math), Larry Larrick (custodial staff), Tim Oliver (custodial staff), Rick Harbour (custodial Staff), Missy Tripucka (library secretary), and Ian Nielson (Info. Tech).

Students at West High are encouraged to try and advance their academic education with the use of scholarships they can win. There are plenty of scholarships students can apply for and some of these include: https://studentscholarships.org/scholarship/19706/no-essay-nitro-scholarship

Student parking permits will be available for purchase on the first full day of school, Thursday, August 3rd. To purchase a parking permit you must come to the front office and speak with either Mr. Davenport at the reception window or Mrs. Jenkins in the main office. Please have the following items completed when you come to purchase your pass:

Random Drug Testing form (This is on Parking graphic on the school website)

Student Parking Registration form (This is on Parking graphic on the school website)

You will also need your valid driver's license and current auto insurance card with expiration date (We will make copies for our records.). If you need copies of these forms, you may pick them up in the main office or at the security window.

Additionally, we will once again be offering the opportunity for seniors to reserve and personalize a parking space. The cost to reserve and personalize a parking space is $50. This includes the parking permit and reserved space. To participate in this event please submit payment and paperwork to Ms. Long and Mrs. Creech in the library. All the paperwork linked above is required in addition to the Personalized Parking Information Form linked below.

Paint and supplies are the responsibility of the students. If you have any questions about the process please contact any of the following staff members: Ms. Long (Library), Mrs. Creech (Library), Mrs. Jenkins (Main Office), Mr. Davenport (Main Office)

Students, if you haven't already joined the Google Classroom for your grade level's announcements, please do so as soon as possible. We will post important information and links there from Student Council, West Side Story, Astron Yearbook, and other clubs and organizations throughout the year. Freshman use code et2f6wd, Sophomores use code 6bdkwyv, Juniors use code uiu527x, and Seniors use code rsafv3u.

Order forms for free Trojan Nation t-shirts are due to Ms. Cobb by Wednesday afternoon. See your TNN teacher to get your name and shirt size on the list before Wednesday's deadline!

Attention Freshmen: Student Council applications to run for Freshmen Class Offices will be available from Monday, August 7th to Friday, August 18th. If you are interested in running for Class President, Vice President, Secretary, Historian, or Representative, please pick up an application during TNN on Monday or in the front office. The application will take some time to complete, so don't wait until the last minute! Elections will be held on Friday, August 25th.

In Sports news, Aug. 7, West has a golf game at 4:00 at The Country Club. Aug. 8, West has a home Soccer game at 6:00. In addition, Aug. 10, West has a soccer game at UCHS at 6:30. There will be an away game jamboree at Cocke County Aug. 11. The time is to be announced.
