At Morristown Hamblen West and East high schools, there are multiple classes one can take that offer certifications in different subjects. Most CTE classes offer OSHA ten certifications. These classes include:
The Advanced Computer Apps class with Amy Whaley: This class can earn students the Microsoft office certification in Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
The Nursing education class and Clinical internship class with Sherry Skeen: Nursing education will get you your CNA license and after a student has the 40 hours of classroom, 20 hours of classroom clinical, and 40 hours of clinicals they can obtain their CNA certification. The Clinical Internship class allows students to go to clinical sites 3-4 days a week, during their class period. Clinical sites can be Doctor's offices, Dental offices, Veterinarian clinics, Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy clinics. This will get students their OSHA 10 certification. Both of these classes will help students obtain their BLS, Basic Life Support, certification.
The Medical Assistant class with Darlene Adkins: This class offers the CMA or Certified Medical Assistant certification.
The Exercise science class with Jeremy Emmons: This class will be taught next semester and will help students obtain the Physical Therapy Aide certification. It is perfect for any student looking to pursue a career in any rehabilitation field.
The Machining I and II classes with William Short: These classes will earn one a PMI or Precision Measuring Instruments certification.
Industrial Maintenance and Principles of Manufacturing classes with Wesley Harbin: These classes will also assist students in getting their Precision Measuring Instruments certification too.
The welding classes with Josh Miller: This class is available to all students and allows students to obtain their AWS certification or American Welding Society certification.
As long as students who have taken the class have a GPA average of 3.0 and at least one certification, they will graduate with distinction. This will liken the chance that a student will become a Tri-Star scholar at graduation.
A Tri-Star scholar is a student who earns a composite score of nineteen (19) or higher on the ACT, or an equivalent score on the SAT, and earns a capstone industry certification as promoted by the department of education, shall be recognized as a Tennessee Tri-Star Scholar upon graduation from high school.
These certifications also really help in the real world when finding a career. With an industry certification one can get a work ethic diploma and can make more money at his or her job, and it makes it easier to get accepted into schools with those certain certification fields.
