On Friday, April 9, West High hosted their annual talent show. Due to COVID-19, the show had to be prerecorded and shown through YouTube to prevent large groups from gathering in the auditorium. There were a total of nine participants with a wide variety of talents being shown. The winners were Emily Gray in First Place winning $100, Gretchen Greene in second place winning $50, and Camdyn Dore in third place winning $25. Gray presented a flip book portraying her school life, Greene preformed “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi on the piano, and Dore sang “Rock Salt & Nails” by Tyler Childers.
Gray stated, “My talent show entry was inspired by my time at West and the memories I've made. In general though my biggest inspiration is my family. I've been drawing since I was little, but I've never really animated anything before. Making the flipbooks took about 48 hours of drawing. Since the talent show was virtual this year and it's my last year of high school, I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to showcase a talent that couldn't really be shown in a typical talent show! Thank you to everyone who voted for my video, and thanks so much for all of the positive feedback!”
Greene said, “Music always has been a big part of my life. I have been blessed to be surrounded by talented and amazing musicians who have pushed me to become better each day. I have been playing for eight years. I enjoy sharing my talents with others hoping to instill an appreciation for the arts and possibly encourage them take up piano or another instrument.”
Greene also added, “Music is a wonderful outlet, especially during stressful times like these. It’s never too late to start learning an instrument!”
